Predictions of Creative Misfortune - MNF - Week 4 (2013)

With one game remaining in week 4, the fourth week of predictions showed very poor results for all systems...

All systems, except the Overall PPY formula, only managed to pick 8 of the 14 games correctly this weekend for a meager 57.14% accuracy. The Overall PPY formula finished the worst of the week, picking only 6 of the 14 games correctly for a terrible 42.86% accuracy.

All systems favor the Saints at home tonight in the Monday Night matchup between undefeated teams, but the way they picked the rest of the week 4 games, who knows how accurate they will be about tonight's contest.

Monday Night Game Prediction:

Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints
Overall Points Per Yard Pick: New Orleans Saints by 4
Home/Away Points Per Yard Pick: New Orleans Saints by 3
Vegas Lines Pick: New Orleans Saints by 7. Saints by 7, Over/Under 48
Best Record Wins Pick: New Orleans Saints by 3. Both teams at 3-0, home team wins
Home Team Wins Pick: New Orleans Saints by 3

Week 4 "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..." results will be posted on Wednesday. How many teams improved their fantasy records this week, despite losing in real life?

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 3 (2013)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 32)
Seriously, Jacksonville. Just bring Tebow in now. There are questions at quarterback and the only way you can energize fans to actually want to come see the Jaguars lose is if Tim Tebow is on the roster. Sure, it may be a failed experiment, but what has worked for you lately?

     # 31 - New York Giants (previous: 28)
Even bad teams don't look as horrible as the Giants this past Sunday. Who knows what is going on, but I'm sure this is all David Wilson's fault somehow. Or maybe it is just that the Giants aren't very good this year.

     # 30 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 30)
There were some bright spots on Sunday night against the Bears, but those bright spots are easily forgotten once you see the huge number of points Chicago, a historical offensive juggernaut, put up against this once proud Steel Curtain.

     # 29 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 25)
The defense is playing solid, but the offense just can't seem to move the ball.

     # 28 - Washington Redskins (previous: 29)
Maybe RGIII shouldn't have rushed his return. The Redskins may still be 0-3, but at least they wouldn't be taking as much heat as they are now.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 26)
How can you lose to the Browns? At home? Against a second-start quarterback?

     # 26 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 24)
10 points in the last two games? Nobody knows what is going on with the 49ers these days.

     # 25 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 21)
The Rams took a step back against Dallas this past weekend, but this is a young team full of potential.

     # 24 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 19)
Safety Rashad Johnson lost the tip of his finger last week against the Saints… and stayed in the game. If only heart always superceded talent on the scoreboard, the Cardinals would have been victors on Sunday.

     # 23 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 31)
They are not giving up on the season! Ok, so beat somebody other than the Minnesota Vikings and prove it.

     # 22 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 17)
In an alternate world, Janikowski attempts, and makes, that 68-yard field goal to end the first half on Monday night, changing the fortunes of the Raiders in 2013… They go on to upset the Broncos on another last-second field goal, win 10 of their remaining games to steal the division title, upset the Broncos, Bengals and Patriots in the playoffs and Terrelle Pryor scrambles for the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl with mere seconds left on the clock as Russell Wilson watches in dismay from the Seattle sideline!!!! But, sadly, that doesn't happen. Instead of attempting the FG, the Raiders try a lame Hail Mary attempt and their hopes for the future, much like Pryor, get sacked. More's the pity, I say.

     # 21 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 18)
So close to defeating the Jets, the Bills are once again headed for the cellar of the AFC East.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 20)
So much for that fast-paced, blur offense. The Eagles only rank in the middle of teams when it comes to plays run per game. Their defense has to force more 3-and-outs in order for Kelly's Oregon Eagles to be as successful as they want to be.

     # 19 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 27)
Either the Giants are really that bad or the Panthers took a huge step forward last weekend. They still may be the odd team out of the division race, but they certainly have some confidence now.

     # 18 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 11)
Ouch! That last second drive by the Dolphins really hurt the Falcons. Just three games in, they are already two full games behind the Saints in the standings.

     # 17 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 14)
Can't really fault them for losing a close one in Tennessee.

     # 16 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 9)
The Packers are quickly falling into must-win territory with the Bears still undefeated and the Lions playing strong.

     # 15 - New York Jets (previous: 22)
The Jets are still winning ugly, but unlike past seasons, they are winning. Looks like we have definitely seen the end of Mark Sanchez's inaccurate reign of terror.

     # 14 - Houston Texans (previous: 4)
The Texans have been hit or miss so far this year. That doesn't translate to another playoff appearance. That translates to a disappointing 8-8 season.

     # 13 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 23)
The Ravens scored 30 points without a running game. What is this world coming to?

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 16)
One of the surprise teams of the early season, the Titans could easily be undefeated still if they had not allowed that late-game rally to the Texans two weeks ago.

     # 11 - Detroit Lions (previous: 15)
Nothing like winning for the first time in Washington since… forever.

     # 10 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 10)
A great, comeback win against Green Bay. The Bengals of old would have quit after the Packers rolled them during the second and third quarters, but not these 2013 Bengals.

     # 9 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 13)
A great win on the road over the defending NFC champions has tabled all talk of a sophomore season slump for Luck.

     # 8 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 12)
The best team in the NFC East! That isn't saying much, but the Cowboys have rediscovered their running game and the division looks like theirs to lose.

     # 7 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 8)
Huge win over Atlanta on Sunday. The defense keeps the Dolphins in games and now it looks like the offense can actually win them.

     # 6 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 7)
The Chiefs may not be for real, but they certainly impressed me after their solid victory over the Eagles last week.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 6)
If the Saints can continue to play defense - something sorely lacking last season - New Orleans should find themselves back in the playoffs come January.

     # 4 - New England Patriots (previous: 3)
Despite all the missing parts, the Patriots just keep on winning.

     # 3 - Chicago Bears (previous: 5)
The Chicago defense is generating points again and the offense is moving the ball better than they have in years.

     # 2 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 2)
The Seahawks are the only team playing remotely close to the level of the Broncos right now. With the rest of their division falling apart, the Seahawks are already playing for the NFC's #1 overall seed in the playoffs.

     # 1 - Denver Broncos (previous: 1)
Outstanding, record-breaking offense. Stout, solid defense. Great home-field advantage. Can anything stop the Broncos?

Week 3 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Houston Texans (-10), Green Bay Packers (-7), Atlanta Falcons (-7), Oakland Raiders (-5), Arizona Cardinals (-5)

The Biggest Movers - Baltimore Ravens (+10), Carolina Panthers (+8), Cleveland Browns (+8), New York Jets (+7), Dallas Cowboys (+4)

Maintaining The Status Quo - Denver Broncos (1), Seattle Seahawks (2), Cincinnati Bengals (10), Philadelphia Eagles (20), Pittsburgh Steelers (30), Jacksonville Jaguars (32)

Week 3 Results (2013) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."

No real close fantasy games this week and a few very big blowouts.

In week 3, both the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers managed to win fantasy games they lost in real life.

High score of the week goes to the Carolina Panthers, who scored 120 points when they demolished the New York Giants.

Low score falls to the New York Giants at 11 points. The Giants were unable to score enough fantasy points to beat the real 38 points the Carolina Panthers scored against them. The Giants weren't the only team to get blasted this week. The Arizona Cardinals only managed a mere 29 fantasy points and failed to top the real 31 points the Saints scored against them. Kind of hard to win real football games when you can't even score enough fantasy points to win the game!

Closest Game of the Week: Atlanta Falcons 75, Miami Dolphins 68. The Falcons may not have survived the real fourth quarter comeback by the Dolphins, but they held on in the fantasy world.

Fantasy Stars of the Week: Drew Brees, 31 points; Antonio Brown, 31 points. Always nice to see somebody besides a quarterback named Manning be the star player of the week.

Predictions of Creative Misfortune - MNF - Week 3 (2013)

With one game remaining in week 3, the third week of predictions showed the following results for our systems...

The blind Best Record Wins formula came out on top in a big way in week 3 - hitting 12 out of 15 games correctly for an impressive 80.00% accuracy percentage. This blind method of picking game winners is now tied with Vegas for the season.

Creative Misfortune's Home/Away PPY formula and the blind Home Team Wins formula tied for second place getting 10 out of 15 games for a 66.67% accuracy percentage.

Both the Vegas Lines and Creative Misfortune's Overall PPY formulas stumbled this week, coming in at 9 out of 15 games picked accurately for a very pedestrian 60.00% accuracy.

All systems have predicted a big win by the Broncos at home tonight.

Predictions of Creative Misfortune - TNF - Week 3 (2013)

All systems exceeded the 70% accuracy mark last week, with the Overall PPY formula winning the week by picking an impressive 13 out of 16 games accurately. Will the systems be able to maintain their accuracy in a volatile week 3 where a large number of teams are trying to avoid 0-3 starts? We'll know how everything shakes out on Monday. The systems are already divided on their Thursday Night Game picks...

Thursday Night Game Prediction:

Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles
Overall Points Per Yard Pick: Kansas City Chiefs by 6
Home/Away Points Per Yard Pick: Kansas City Chiefs by 10
Vegas Lines Pick: Philadelphia Eagles by 3. Eagles by 3, Over/Under 51
Best Record Wins Pick: Kansas City Chiefs by 3. Chiefs better at 2-0
Home Team Wins Pick: Philadelphia Eagles by 3

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 2 (2013)

The Jaguars show no signs of improving and injuries will only make them worse.

     # 31 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 31)
For a second I thought they might pull off the upset, but then the Browns went back to playing like they always do.

     # 30 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 28)
This team is old, injury-prone and just not executing.

     # 29 - Washington Redskins (previous: 23)
RGIII and the offense need to figure out how to play in the first half.

     # 28 - New York Giants (previous: 19)
The Giants look like an unfolding lawn chair… sure, they have potential, but they just don't look right in your living room.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 30)
The Panthers have been close in both games this season, but they should be beyond losing those close games by now.

     # 26 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 26)
So close… goes to show you they can't win without Adrian Peterson scoring TDs for them.

     # 25 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 22)
Two straight losses on two last second field goals… maybe if Coach Schiano stopped blitzing victory formations at the end of games karma would allow the Buccaneers to win some of these close games.

     # 24 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 4)
I don't care how good you were last week, you don't get blown up by your #1 division rival on national TV. The 49ers looked about as bad as a team could look in the second half after keeping the game close early.

     # 23 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 29)
Rice is hurt, but the Ravens managed to win. The defense is too inexperienced now for them to win games only scoring 14 points. Flacco better get this offense moving sooner rather than later.

     # 22 - New York Jets (previous: 16)
Is there any team in the league that plays uglier football than the New York Jets?

     # 21 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 13)
The Rams were hammered by the Falcons in the first half, but showed a lot of spirit in the second half, proving that this young team is close to taking that next step towards bigger and better things.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 12)
The blur offense isn't much fun if your defense can't stop the other team from scoring.

     # 19 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 25)
A great comeback win at home for the Cardinals.

     # 18 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 24)
The Bills are young and showing some fight this season.

     # 17 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 27)
Terrelle Pryor has this team moving in the right direction and the emphasis on the running game will help the Raiders be competitive this season.

     # 16 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 14)
So close to being 2-0, the Titans will either learn from this last heartbreaking loss or start to fall apart.

     # 15 - Detroit Lions (previous: 11)
All the offensive weapons in the world and the Lions still manage to lose games they shouldn't.

     # 14 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 17)
San Diego is primed for an AFC Wild Card spot. They can't overtake Denver, so there's no pressure on them to win.

     # 13 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 8)
Either the Colts are playing down to their true talent level or the Dolphins are better than advertised. The next few weeks will tell us for sure whether or not Luck is in for a sophomore slump.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 10)
Bad turnovers in the second half cost the Cowboys a victory this weekend. The defense is playing solid. The offense has to improve if they hope to be any better than .500 this year.

     # 11 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 20)
A dominating first half performance. The Falcons need to practice playing four full quarters otherwise they will once again find themselves on the outside of the Super Bowl looking in.

     # 10 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 18)
The class of the AFC North… If the Bengals do not win the division, there will be a lot of explaining to do on their part.

     # 9 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 21)
The Packers have the potential to dominate again this season. Interesting to see how they match up with the Bears when these two division rivals collide to determine who wins the NFC North title.

     # 8 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 7)
Could the Dolphins be for real? Their defense is certainly playing well enough for them to make the playoffs. If the offense can stay relatively mistake free, they may have a chance to do big things.

     # 7 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 15)
They are 2-0, but their victories came over a worthless Jaguars team and a Cowboys team that continues to self-destruct. If they are better than .500 when the month ends, the Chiefs will definitely have improved over last season.

     # 6 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 9)
When this defense limits the opposing team to just 14 points - 7, really, because of a pick-6 thrown by Brees - the offense should be able to win the game by more than a last-second field goal.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - Chicago Bears (previous: 6)
Good teams find a way to win. The Bears found a way on Sunday.

     # 4 - Houston Texans (previous: 5)
The Texans are trying to give their fans a heart-attack. Two wins and an undefeated record, but they could easily be 0-2 now wondering what happened to their season.

     # 3 - New England Patriots (previous: 3)
If a receiver, besides Edelman, on this team could just catch, they'd be just fine.

     # 2 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 2)
The Seahawks are now the team to beat in the NFC after they gave the league a perfect outline of how to shut down Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers.

     # 1 - Denver Broncos (previous: 1)
Peyton once again reigns supreme in the Manning Bowl. Too bad he can't really enjoy the victory like he would like to. The best part about this game for Denver? They won with a running game, defense and great special teams. Who needs 7 TDs from Manning when you can play such well-rounded football?

Week 2 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - San Francisco 49ers (-20), New York Giants (-9), Philadelphia Eagles (-8), St. Louis Rams (-8), New York Jets (-6)

The Biggest Movers - Green Bay Packers (+12), Oakland Raiders (+10), Atlanta Falcons (+9), Kansas City Chiefs (+8), Cincinnati Bengals (+8)

Maintaining The Status Quo - Denver Broncos (1), Seattle Seahawks (2), New England Patriots (3), Minnesota Vikings (26), Cleveland Browns (31), Jacksonville Jaguars (32)

Week 2 Results (2013) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."

A lot of close fantasy games this week... probably a record number of 1-pt games in Creative Misfortune's "If Real football Used Fantasy Scoring..." history. How did your team play? Mine lost, by one point in both fantasy and real life. More's the pity, I say.

In week 2, only the Detroit Lions managed to win a fantasy game they lost in real life.

High score of the week goes to the Green Bay Packers, who scored an impressive 132 points against the Washington Redskins.

Low score falls to the San Francisco 49ers at 21 points. Completely clobbered by their division rivals, the 49ers were unable to score enough fantasy points to beat the real 29 points the Seattle Seahawks scored against them.

Kansas City Chiefs 67, Dallas Cowboys 66

Detroit Lions 69, Arizona Cardinals 68
