Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 8 (2013)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 32)
Nothing says we haven't quit on the season like losing a game 42-10… at home.

     # 31 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 31)
The Bucs aren't nearly as bad as the Jaguars, but I'd be surprised if this team managed to win more than two games this year.

     # 30 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 30)
The QB carousel in Minnesota continues and the defense is starting to buckle under the weight of an offense not going anywhere.

     # 29 - New York Giants (previous: 29)
Two straight wins have the Giant faithful thinking playoffs. In a weak division, they definitely aren't out of it.

     # 28 - Houston Texans (previous: 28)
Has the much-needed bye week helped the Texans regroup for the second half of the season?

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 27)
Just when you think the Steelers have things figured out, they get run over by Terrelle Pryor and the Oakland Raiders.

     # 26 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 24)
It's hard to win football games when you can't even stay competitive with the Cardinals.

     # 25 - Washington Redskins (previous: 25)
The Redskins were all primed for the major upset and then Peyton Manning happened.

     # 24 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 23)
St. Louis shocked everybody last night by almost knocking off the Seahawks. If the defense keeps playing strong, the offense may be able to get into gear and notch a few more wins before the season is over.

     # 23 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 21)
Is there a quarterback on this team that can play the full 60 minutes?

     # 22 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 22)
Two straight road losses have knocked the Browns down a bit, but with those losses coming to the Packers and Chiefs, they weren't nearly as bad as they could have been.

     # 21 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 19)
Buffalo just doesn't have what it takes to stay with the elite NFL teams.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 26)
Terrelle Pryor can run and throw… now if the Raiders can just get some solid personnel around him, he could take this franchise back to its glory days.

     # 19 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 17)
Losses in the division are going to kill Miami's playoff hopes.

     # 18 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 18)
The Ravens have to come charging out of the bye if they hope to catch Cincinnati.

     # 17 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 16)
The Titans probably will miss the playoffs, but they still can surprise some people.

     # 16 - New York Jets (previous: 14)
Isn't it just like the Jets to win a great game over their division rivals and then get completely blown out the following week?

     # 15 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 20)
Huge win for the Cardinals and a huge day for their running game. Arizona is still overmatched in the tough NFC West, though.

     # 14 - Chicago Bears (previous: 13)
Will one week to heal be enough for the Bears?

     # 13 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 12)
Despite being third place in the division, the Chargers are primed to push for a playoff spot coming out of their bye week.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 10)
Ugh, Dallas, that was terrible. How can you lose a game like that with just one minute to go when the defense has played so well most of the season? "4-4" translates to "8-8 and missing the playoffs" if Dallas can't stop giving games away.

     # 11 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 15)
A big win on Thursday Night and a loss by the Falcons makes the Panthers the only team that can challenge New Orleans for the division title.

     # 10 - Detroit Lions (previous: 11)
Megatron! 329 yards receiving! Need I say more?

     # 9 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 9)
Despite Detroit's prowess, Green Bay remains the team to beat in the NFC North.

     # 8 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 4)
That bye week after defeating the Broncos had to be one of the sweetest bye weeks these players have ever experienced. Questions still remain about how they will deal with the loss of Reggie Wayne on the outside.

     # 7 - New England Patriots (previous: 7)
The Patriots are better than average, but are they really good?

     # 6 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 8)
Marvin Jones! Four touchdowns to help Cincinnati take a commanding lead in the AFC North.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 6)
The 49ers have quietly won six straight games…

     # 4 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 5)
Aside from a terrible sequence in New England, the Saints could be undefeated and they don't show any signs of slowing down.

     # 3 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 2)
I think everybody expected more out of Seattle on Monday Night.

     # 2 - Denver Broncos (previous: 3)
Don't make Peyton Manning angry… nobody can erase a 2-touchdown deficit faster.

     # 1 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 1)
Still undefeated, still number one. A win this week sends the Chiefs into the bye a perfect 9-0 with the Denver Broncos looming on the other side.

Week 8 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Indianapolis Colts (-4), Dallas Cowboys (-2), New York Jets (-2), Miami Dolphins (-2), Buffalo Bills (-2)

The Biggest Movers - Oakland Raiders (+6), Arizona Cardinals (+5), Carolina Panthers (+4), Cincinnati Bengals (+2), Denver Broncos (+1)

Week 8 Results (2013) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."

A full two-thirds of the Creative Misfortune fantasy season has been completed and teams are preparing for their playoff runs... some much better than others.

In week 8, only the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to win a fantasy game they lost in real life. Despite Terrelle Pryor's record run, the Steel Curtain was able to hold Oakland's offense at bay just enough to secure a 62-52 fantasy victory over the Raiders.

High score of the week goes to the Cincinnati Bengals, who scored 122 points as they completely obliterated the New York J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

Low score falls to the aforementioned New York Jets, whose 26 fantasy points couldn't even come close to the real 49 points the Bengals scored against them.

Closest Game of the Week: Kansas City Chiefs 73, Cleveland Browns 68. The Chiefs may not be flashy, but their slow and steady approach to both fantasy and real football has them sitting alone with the best record in the NFL.

Fantasy Stars of the Week: Calvin Johnson, 36 points; Marvin Jones 36 points. Wide receivers ran wild this weekend and while both players scored 36 points, they got to that number by radically different ways. Megatron's 329 receiving yards ranked as the second all-time receiving performance in NFL history, whereas Marvin Jones used the strength of 4 receiving TDs in order to achieve his score.

PLAYOFF PICTURE

With 4 weeks remaining in the Creative Misfortune fantasy regular season, no teams have clinched a playoff spot yet (weeks 13-16).

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 7 (2013)

The Jaguars continue to play terrible football. It's as if they try for a half, then give up and just try and get the game over as soon as possible.

     # 31 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 30)
The Bucs remain winless, but showed some life in the second half of their game against the Falcons.

     # 30 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 28)
The Vikings should have started Cassell over Freeman. Freeman just was not ready yet and the Giants easily could have been defeated if the Vikings showed any semblance of competance on the offensive side of the ball.

     # 29 - New York Giants (previous: 31)
Congratulations, New York! You beat the Vikings, the only other one-win team in the league starting a quarterback who had only practiced with the team for three weeks. That has to make you feel proud.

     # 28 - Houston Texans (previous: 25)
And the news just keeps getting worse and worse for the Texans.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 29)
The Steelers are 2-0 coming out of their bye week after starting 0-4. That says a lot about their pride and character as a football team. It may not translate into a playoff run, but at least they will be good enough to have a say in who makes it to the second season.

     # 26 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 24)
Oakland was on a bye week last week and I didn't even notice. That says a lot.

     # 25 - Washington Redskins (previous: 27)
Washington wins a wild one over the Bears, but their offense can't score 45 points every week. The defense has to play better, especially since Chicago was without their starting quarterback for most of the game.

     # 24 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 26)
The Falcons gained a little bit of stability with their win over the Buccaneers, but a solid run of victories will be needed before anybody will forget their early season troubles.

     # 23 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 20)
Sam Bradford done for the year and new quarterbacks are being tried out as we speak. That does not bode well for the rest of the season.

     # 22 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 17)
The Browns definitely haven't given up on the season. They were just overmatched by a much better Packers team.

     # 21 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 18)
The Blur Offense has resulted in injuries to both Vick and Foles. Will either of them finish the season?

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 19)
The combination of Carson Palmer and a suspect running game keeps the Cardinals from soaring.

     # 19 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 23)
A big road win over the Dolphins has the Bills thinking they might have a chance. Sure, they are still in last place and still have a losing record, but that doesn't mean they don't have a chance to get back into the division race the way all the other AFC East teams are playing.

     # 18 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 16)
The Ravens just can't find the right gear on offense.

     # 17 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 12)
You are supposed to win home games coming out of the bye week, Miami. Not lose them to division rivals.

     # 16 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 14)
Three straight losses have brought the early overachievers back to where they were expected to be all along - just below .500.

     # 15 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 22)
Still undecided if the Panthers are good this year or not.

     # 14 - New York Jets (previous: 21)
The only thing, honestly, that surprised me about the Jets upset of the Patriots last week was the number of points scored in the contest. The Jets get an impressive, much-needed win at home over their division rivals.

     # 13 - Chicago Bears (previous: 10)
Cutler's injury definitely puts a damper on Chicago's playoff hopes and their defense getting shellacked for 45 points by RGIII and the Redskins can't help their confidence any.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 15)
Denver's loss gives the Chargers hope… especially since the Broncos and Chiefs have yet to play each other this season.

     # 11 - Detroit Lions (previous: 8)
Another close loss drops the Lions a half-game behind the Packers and they have already lost to Green Bay once this season.

     # 10 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 13)
A huge division win on the road in Philadelphia makes Dallas the team to beat in the woeful NFC East. If they can hold their own against other NFC opponents, they just might gain enough confidence to actually do something in the playoffs this year.

     # 9 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 11)
With the Bears, Lions and Vikings all stumbling and beat up now, who doesn't see the Packers taking control of the division during the second half of the season?

     # 8 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 9)
The Bengals are playing tough football and starting to break away from the pack in the AFC North.

     # 7 - New England Patriots (previous: 4)
The Patriots are starting to crack under the pressure of playing with a bunch of no-name players. Even the great Gronkowski couldn't bail Brady out this week.

     # 6 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 7)
Four straight wins have the 49ers confident again, but they haven't quite got the passing game figured out yet this season.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 5)
Let's see if the Saints learned anything during their bye week after their horrible letdown against the Patriots in week 6.

     # 4 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 6)
The Colts have beaten the 49ers, Seahawks and Broncos… but now they will really be tested with the loss of Reggie Wayne for the season.

     # 3 - Denver Broncos (previous: 1)
It doesn't do any good for your offense to average 35 points a game if your defense starts giving up 40 points a game.

     # 2 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 3)
The Seahawks defense gives them the edge over the Broncos.

     # 1 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 2)
How awesome would it be if the Kansas City Chiefs actually ran the table and finished the season a perfect 19-0? Sure, it won't happen, but it would definitely make for a fun story.

Week 7 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Miami Dolphins (-5), Cleveland Browns (-5), New England Patriots (-3), Detroit Lions (-3), Chicago Bears (-3)

The Biggest Movers - New York Jets (+7), Carolina Panthers (+7), Buffalo Bills (+4), Dallas Cowboys (+3), San Diego Chargers (+3)

Maintaining The Status Quo - New Orleans Saints (5), Jacksonville Jaguars (32)

Week 7 Results (2013) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."

A ton of injuries over the weekend impacted the results of both real and fantasy games across the NFL.

In week 7, the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans all managed to win fantasy games they lost in real life. The Houston Texans had the biggest fantasy victory of the weekend, knocking off the lone remaining undefeated team in the fantasy world, the surprising Kansas City Chiefs.

High score of the week goes to the Washington Redskins, who scored 98 points against the Chicago Bears.

Low score falls to the Minnesota Vikings at 30 points, who played absolutely terrible on Monday night against the New York Giants. The Vikings did manage to at least score enough fantasy points to beat the 23 real points the Giants scored against them.

Closest Game of the Week: Baltimore Ravens 54, Pittsburgh Steelers 53. It took every fantasy point the Ravens had in order to steal a fantasy victory from the Steelers.

Fantasy Star of the Week: Andrew Luck, 29 points. Going head-to-head against the Hall of Fame quarterback he replaced in Indianapolis, Luck emerged as this week's highest fantasy scorer, however the victory was marred by the loss of Reggie Wayne to an ACL injury. Unfortunately one of Luck's passes to his number one wide receiver was low and Wayne's knee buckled beneath him when he tried to awkwardly catch the errant throw. A fluke of a play to be sure, but one that will haunt Luck and the Colts the rest of the season.

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 6 (2013)

The Jaguars beat the biggest spread in NFL history! At least they have that going for them.

     # 31 - New York Giants (previous: 31)
Injuries have now added to New York's woes… They will win some games yet this year, but the work on the 2014 season has already started.

     # 30 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 29)
Still winless in Tampa, despite the changes at quarterback. Still far too early to tell if releasing Freeman was a good move on their part.

     # 29 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 30)
The Steelers come out of the bye week and notch a solid victory on the road. It's still not too late for them to turn their season around.

     # 28 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 26)
Tough week for the Vikings to play a game…

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Washington Redskins (previous: 27)
The Redskins had their moments on Sunday night, but they were outclassed by the Cowboys in almost every facet of the game.

     # 26 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 28)
Four games out of first place. We'll see if Atlanta remembered how to win games during their time off.

     # 25 - Houston Texans (previous: 23)
This team is falling quickly… Wonder what the record is for most consecutive games with a thrown Pick-6 is?

     # 24 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 19)
Oakland stayed with the undefeated Chiefs for a little bit, but then were just over matched by their division rivals.

     # 23 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 21)
So close to victory, the Bills drop a tough one at home in overtime.

     # 22 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 25)
Now that is how Carolina should have played coming out of the bye week last week. You can't tell me Arizona is a far superior team to Minnesota.

     # 21 - New York Jets (previous: 16)
Just when you think they have it all figured out, they lose at home in an ugly game.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 24)
Looks like the Rams have finally recovered from their losses to the Cowboys and 49ers a few weeks back.

     # 19 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 14)
An uncharacteristic fumble by Larry Fitzgerald hurt their chances against the 49ers. Even if he holds onto the ball, though, the 49ers would have dropped the Cardinals back to .500.

     # 18 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 22)
Is Foles better than Vick? Hard to say, but a big NFC East battle against Dallas next weekend will help answer that question.

     # 17 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 10)
The Browns are still an impressive 3-1 since making the Richardson trade.

     # 16 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 12)
The Ravens aren't going to repeat as Super Bowl champions if they keep dropping games at home.

     # 15 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 20)
The San Diego Chargers are like a box of chocolates… you just never know what you are going to get from week to week.

     # 14 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 7)
A close loss on the road to an NFC powerhouse is nothing to hang your head about. The loss by the Colts helps, too.

     # 13 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 18)
The offense seems to have it figured out, but the injuries have devastated the defensive line. Will the no-name Cowboys rise up and make themselves known? First chance comes next weekend when they take on the Eagles and their Blur Offense.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 15)
Chasing the Patriots out of the bye week, Miami still is very much alive in the AFC East.

     # 11 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 17)
Big wins on the road are always good. The Packers need the wins in the division, though, in order to make it to the playoffs.

     # 10 - Chicago Bears (previous: 11)
The Bears nearly let the game against the Giants slip away. You never want to flirt with that late-game Manning magic, but they survived the scare with flying colors.

     # 9 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 13)
All alone in first place, the AFC North is theirs to rule for the time being.

     # 8 - Detroit Lions (previous: 9)
After dropping a couple games recently, Detroit picks up another win to stay even with the Bears atop the NFC North.

     # 7 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 8)
Now the 49ers are playing like they did a year ago, but they always seem to make things a bit more difficult than they need to be.

     # 6 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 4)
Tough loss during Luck's debut on Monday Night Football. Wonder what the story angles will be this week when Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos come to town?

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 3)
The Saints had the Patriots right until the very end, then they let it all slip away.

     # 4 - New England Patriots (previous: 6)
Tom Brady beats Drew Brees for the first time since their college days. Great win by the Patriots, despite continuing to cobble together a receiving corps for Brady to play catch with.

     # 3 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 5)
Seattle rebounds from their loss last week with a serviceable win at home.

     # 2 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 2)
Can they hold it together and remain undefeated until they face off against the Broncos in week 11? Good news for the Chiefs - they have their bye week in week 10.

     # 1 - Denver Broncos (previous: 1)
It might be harder for the Broncos to remain undefeated than for Kansas City to remain undefeated until they face off against the Chiefs in week 11, but I have no reason to believe that both teams won't be 9-0 going into that epic divisional matchup.

Week 6 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Tennessee Titans (-7), Cleveland Browns (-7), Arizona Cardinals (-5), New York Jets (-5), Oakland Raiders (-5)

The Biggest Movers - Green Bay Packers (+6), Dallas Cowboys (+5), San Diego Chargers (+5), Cincinnati Bengals (+4), Philadelphia Eagles (+4)

Maintaining The Status Quo - Denver Broncos (1), Kansas City Chiefs (2), Washington Redskins (27), New York Giants (31), Jacksonville Jaguars (32)

Week 6 Results (2013) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."

Week 6 ended up being pretty tame from a fantasy perspective. No teams won games they lost in real life. No individual performances jumped out. A lot of good play, a lot of bad play, but really just a ho-hum week in the fantasy world.

High score of the week goes to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Carolina Panthers, who both scored 100 points and were the only teams to eclipse the century mark.

Low score falls to the New York Jets at 35 points. And despite a couple low scores this week, no team failed to score more fantasy points than the real number of points scored against them. Ho-hum, indeed.

Closest Game of the Week: Green Bay Packers 82, Baltimore Ravens 77. Green Bay prevails in the closest game of the fantasy weekend by slightly more points than they won by in the real game.

Fantasy Stars of the Week: Cam Newton, 30 points; Vernon Davis 30 points. Always nice when somebody other than Peyton Manning or Drew Brees checks in with the highest score of the week.
