Creative Misfortune Power Rankings - Week 12 (2011)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 32)
The Colts were unwilling to try for perfection a few years back, content to settle for a 14-2 record. Are the football gods punishing them now by having them go 0-16?

     # 31 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 31)
The Rams have been close to breaking through all season, but they just aren’t good enough.

     # 30 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 30)
The slide continues for a team just two years removed from the NFC Championship game.

     # 29 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 29)
The Chiefs tried a fast-paced college offense against the Patriots last week and that worked for about a quarter. If they can turn things around, they still have a chance in the AFC West, but only if they run the table.

     # 28 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 27)
New coach. New owners on the horizon. Could a new city be in the works as well?

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 25)
The Bucs need to settle down and use these last few weeks of the season to figure out what they need to do to be successful in 2012.

     # 26 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 28)
Cam Newton continues to rack up the stats, but it's difficult to crown him rookie of the year, since Andy Dalton has the Bengals in the playoff hunt.

     # 25 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 23)
The Browns continue to disappoint in 2011.

     # 24 - Washington Redskins (previous: 26)
So much for all of my 3-13 talk, but 4-12 still has a nice ring to it.

     # 23 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 24)
The offense and defense may not be doing much, but at least the Special Teams unit is making people pay attention.

     # 22 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 22)
Seattle just bores me. I don't know why.

     # 21 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 20)
The Chargers continue to plummet through the standings. With the firing of Del Rio in Jacksonville, can Norv Turner's departure be close at hand?

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 21)
Tough break in Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Dolphins should still be on a winning streak.

     # 19 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 17)
The Patriots made the Eagles defense look like a JV team. With short rest, will they look any better against a boring Seahawks team?

     # 18 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 18)
Oh, what could have been. The Bills continue to erase all the good feelings created by the outstanding start to their season.

     # 17 - New York Giants (previous: 15)
This defense is not good enough to slow teams down… and the offense is not quite explosive enough to win high-scoring shoot-outs.

     # 16 - Denver Broncos (previous: 19)
A deceptive runnning game, stout defense and the clutch fourth-quarter play of Tim Tebow have Denver suddenly back in the thick of things.

     # 15 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 16)
The Raiders are now clearly the best team in the AFC West.

     # 14 - New York Jets (previous: 14)
A full two games back in the division with five left to play, the Jets need to run the table to have any shot at a playoff spot.

     # 13 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 13)
The door hasn’t closed on the Titans yet. Houston's quarterback struggles have given Tennessee a chance.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 12)
The division may be out of reach, but the #1 Wild Card spot is a distinct possibility.

     # 11 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 10)
How great would it be if Cincinnati actually made the playoffs this year?

     # 10 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 11)
The Cowboys are in charge of the division now, but with two games remaining against the second-place Giants, this race is far from over.

     # 9 - Detroit Lions (previous: 8)
Really, Suh? You lost your balance? I often drive my foot hard into the ground when trying to regain my balance, too.

     # 8 - Chicago Bears (previous: 6)
Caleb Haine has to play better if the Bears are going to make a run at a Wild Card spot.

     # 7 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 9)
An ugly win in Kansas City… but a win is a win this late in the season.

     # 6 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 2)
The 49ers looked out-of-sorts last Thursday for the first time all season. In the NFC West, they should be fine, but one-and-done in the playoffs certainly looks like a more realistic possibility now.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 7)
Brees is on fire and now that all the running backs are healthy, the Saints have added additional versatility to their potent offense.

     # 4 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 5)
A statement win over the 49ers keeps Baltimore in control of their own destiny.

     # 3 - New England Patriots (previous: 4)
If the Patriots continue to play solid defense few teams will be able to match Brady and Co in a shoot-out.

     # 2 - Houston Texans (previous: 3)
Without a quarterback, it is up to Foster, Tate and the defense to keep Houston on pace to reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

     # 1 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 1)
When the Packers clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs, they better learn from the Indianapolis Colts and play lights out to be perfect.
