Creative Misfortune Power Rankings - Week 8

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis. If your team’s ranking remains unchanged for 4 hours or more, please consult with your doctor, as serious side effects may occur.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, winning isn't the only thing, but it is the most important component of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few ~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 28)
The Cowboys have quit on their season. Plain and simple.

     # 31 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 31)
The rumors of Matt Moore's resurgence must have been greatly exaggerated.

     # 30 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 30)
This is probably the best 0-7 team in the history of the league. Yep, they're still terrible, though.

     # 29 - Denver Broncos (previous: 27)
When you leave the country, you're supposed to leave your past behind and start over fresh. That didn't happen in London, unless you count choking away a winnable game in the fourth quarter. The Broncos haven't done that recently.

     # 28 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 32)
Way to get off the losing track by beating another terrible team. The victory moves the 49ers up a bit in the rankings, but they are still Forked.

The Creatively Challenged ~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 19)
Finally, the offense gets things moving only to have the defense fall flat on its face.

     # 26 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 26)
Hopefully the Browns made the most of their bye week. New England comes to town next weekend and Cleveland will have to play perfect to keep it close.

     # 25 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 23)
At 2-5, I say go ahead a pick up another ego-centric wide receiver. What the Bengals would lose in credibility they'd make up in ticket sales.

     # 24 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 22)
I'm beginning to think Chili suddenly realized he is not in charge of this team. Panic seeps from his every pore. Instead of battening down the hatches and guiding the ship to safer waters as great leaders would, he's chuckin' everybody overboard so he can finally, clearly, be recognized as the true captain on a sinking ship.

     # 23 - Washington Redskins (previous: 16)
It's one thing for a diva wide receiver to call out McNabb for being winded at the end of a game. It's quite another for a head coach to do the same.

     # 22 - Detroit Lions (previous: 29)
Detroit's playing well enough they actually might be worth watching on Thanksgiving for a change. They certainly have more going for them than the Cowboys at this point.

     # 21 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 21)
It wasn't a "must-win" game for the Chargers last weekend, but it was one they desperately needed. If they can beat the Texans in Houston next week before they head into their bye, their season might be salvaged.

The Remarkably Average ~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 25)
Solid victories over Dallas these days sound better than they really are

     # 19 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 11)
Nothing screams "UNCLE" like kicking a field goal with 9 minutes to go in a game you are trailing by 23 points. At least the Seahawks had the decency to onside kick afterwards.

     # 18 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 24)
Any win for the Rams is a good win.

     # 17 - Chicago Bears (previous: 18)
I hope Chicago remembered how to run the ball during their bye week. The Bills are itching for a win and if Mad Martz and Cutler can't reign themselves in, Buffalo will ruin Chicago's day.

     # 16 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 20)
92 points in two weeks! Can you believe the week 9 tilt with Kansas City will determine first-place in the AFC West?

     # 15 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 17)
I have an idea - why don't the Dolphins try and win one at home.

     # 14 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 14)
Even the extra week off might not be enough for the Eagles to scheme for Peyton Manning.

     # 13 - Houston Texans (previous: 8)
In a statement game, the Colts reminded everybody that they still own the Texans.

The Fortunate Seven ~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 12)
The wins say a lot, but only a victory in Atlanta this weekend will shatter the myth that this team's record is nothing but smoke and mirrors.

     # 11 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 15)
The foul taste of Cleveland lingers, but a victory over the Steelers helps to cleanse the defending champions'  palate.

     # 10 - New York Giants (previous: 6)
Both Washington and Dallas have faltered. The division is theirs for the taking.

       # 9 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 9)
The road to the NFC championship starts with a big, division game against Tampa Bay this weekend. If they are worthy of championship consideration, the Falcons will not lose this game at home.

       # 8 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 13)
Shutting out the Jets on the road, the Packers now become the team to beat in the NFC, though injuries still hang like a dark cloud over the rest of their season.

       # 7 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 10)
Everything the Chiefs have accomplished this season will mean nothing if they can't beat the Raiders on Sunday.

       # 6 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 5)
The quarterback carousel continues. If Tennessee can't stop it, their season will be in trouble.

The Creative Elite ~
       Wielding misfortune at its finest

       # 5 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 7)
Great quarterbacks make bit players better. Manning is a great quarterback.

       # 4 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 4)
Despite the loss on the road, Pittsburgh will be in every game as long as their defense continues to hold up under fire.

       # 3 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 3)
Sometimes all you have to do to move into first place is sit idle and watch your division rival stumble.

       # 2 - New York Jets (previous: 1)
Only allowing 9 points to a top offensive unit - good idea. Only scoring 0 points yourself - bad idea. Sanchez has the potential to be a great quarterback, but he's not yet ready to carry the team by himself.

       # 1 - New England Patriots (previous: 2)
At 6-1, New England is once again playing efficient, team football. Brady and Belichick may be the heart and soul (or lack thereof) of this team, but every no-name player has a hand in their success.

Week 8 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Seattle Seahawks (-8), Arizona Cardinals (-8) and the Washington Redskins (-7)

The Biggest Movers - Detroit Lions (+7), St. Louis Rams (+6), Jacksonville Jaguars (+5) and the Green Bay Packers (+5)

Maintaining The Status Quo - Baltimore Ravens (3), Pittsburgh Steelers (4), Atlanta Falcons (9), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12), Philadelphia Eagles (14), San Diego Chargers (21), Cleveland Browns (26), Buffalo Bills (30) and the Carolina Panthers (31)
