*November 11, 1926 - The first professional football game is played at Soldier Field in Chicago. The Chicago Bears defeated the Chicago Cardinals 10-0. The historic Soldier Field opened its doors in 1924 as a 45,000-seat Municipal Grant Park Stadium. Builders first developed plans to construct the stadium in 1919 as a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died in World War I.

The stadium hosted its first football game on November 22, 1924, as a capacity crowd watched Notre Dame edge Northwestern, 13-6. The 100,000-seat stadium was dedicated November 27, 1926, with Army battling Navy to a 21-21 tie. The all-time collegiate attendance record of 123,000+ was established November 26, 1927 when Notre Dame defeated Southern Cal, 7-6. Soldier Field also hosted the first boxing event which drew a gate of over $2.5 million when Jack Dempsey faced off against Gene Tunney in 1927.

The largest event at Soldier Field, however, occured on September 8, 1954, when 260,000 people arrived at the stadium for the Catholic church’s Marian Year Tribute.
