Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 9 (2013)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 32)
If any team needed a bye week, it was the 2013 Jacksonville Jaguars. Now we see if the rest did them any good or just strengthen their resolve to run the table and finish 0-16.

     # 31 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 31)
The Buccaneers would have been so much better off mentally if the Seahawks had crushed them 50-0. Instead they lose a very winnable game in dramatic overtime fashion in a way that won't easily be forgotten.

     # 30 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 30)
Only the Vikings could lose the game after Romo throws a late 4th quarter interception.

     # 29 - New York Giants (previous: 29)
Just three games out in the win column with eight left to play… the Giants aren't truly Forked yet.

     # 28 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 27)
The Steel Sieve gave up more points and more yards to the Patriots than to any other team in any other game in the history of this storied franchise. That has to feel good.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Houston Texans (previous: 28)
Statistically speaking, the Texans aren't all that bad. They're 5-3 and in Wild Card position in Creative Misfortune's "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring…" standings. Injuries and unlucky breaks have ruined their season.

     # 26 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 26)
And with that huge loss to Carolina, we can now officially say Atlanta's season is over.

     # 25 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 20)
Despite giving up a record performance by Nick Foles and the Eagles, Oakland played surprisingly well on offense. This team is not there yet, but the pieces are slowly falling into place.

     # 24 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 24)
Who needs a quarterback when you have a running back that can rush for 150+? Ya, the Rams still need a quarterback.

     # 23 - Washington Redskins (previous: 25)
A big win in overtime could help propel the Redskins forward in a week NFC East division.

     # 22 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 21)
Really hard to lose a game when you don't give up an offensive touchdown. Kind of like pitching a no hitter and losing on an error.

     # 21 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 18)
These are not the 2012 Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 23)
It may still be too early to show Michael Vick the door, but it looks like his days in Philadelphia are truly numbered.

     # 19 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 22)
There is no quitting on this season! Can you even remember the last time the Browns had a winning record? They could have one this year if they keep playing like they are.

     # 18 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 19)
A season of possibility has turned into a season of turmoil. Let's hope something far greater comes out of the Incognito issue than a few wins and losses by a football team on a scoresheet.

     # 17 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 15)
The Cardinals have a long way to go in the tough NFC West, but being able to establish a running game will help them in the second half of the season.

     # 16 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 13)
Just when you think the Chargers are going to make their move, they go and drop one like that in Washington.

     # 15 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 17)
Finally, Chris Johnson plays like CJ2K and the Titans win. Coincidence?

     # 14 - New York Jets (previous: 16)
Huge win for the Jets at home to follow up a huge loss last week. This win one, lose one approach won't get them to the playoffs though.

     # 13 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 9)
Ouch! The Packers lose Aaron Rodgers and suddenly become a very beatable football team.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Chicago Bears (previous: 14)
The Bears win with punishing defensive play and a solid offense.

     # 11 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 12)
Still in control of the NFC East, Dallas dodges a bullet and barely escapes with a win over the Vikings.

     # 10 - Detroit Lions (previous: 10)
After Monday Night, the Lions have suddenly become the team to beat in the NFC North.

     # 9 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 11)
The Panthers are quietly switching gears and charging towards the playoffs.

     # 8 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 6)
A bad loss on Halloween will ultimately hurt Cincinnati's playoff seeding more than its standing in the division.

     # 7 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 4)
The Saints just can't win on the road against the AFC East.

     # 6 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 5)
Refreshed from a bye week after six straight victories, the 49ers are ready to make their mark in the second half of the season.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 8)
A great come-from-behind win has the Colts believing they can win, even with the loss of Reggie Wayne.

     # 4 - New England Patriots (previous: 7)
Finally, the juggernaut offense of old wakes from its slumber.

     # 3 - Denver Broncos (previous: 2)
With Coach Fox out now for a while it will be interesting to see how the well-oiled Broncos offensive machine runs under the direction of Jack Del Rio.

     # 2 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 3)
The greatest comeback in Seattle's history should be a point of concern for the Seahawks. They never should have been down 21 points to the winless Buccaneers.

     # 1 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 1)
As long as the Chiefs can keep avoiding that one killer, game-changing mistake, they have a chance to remain undefeated.
