Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 13 (2013)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Houston Texans (previous: 32)
The Texans now control their own destiny for determining who gets the #1 overall draft pick in 2014.

     # 31 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 30)
The Jaguars have three wins… something I never would have thought possible a month ago.

     # 30 - Washington Redskins (previous: 28)
                    RGIII's sophomore slump continues.

     # 29 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 27)
Well, those wins were good while they lasted.

     # 28 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 31)
The Falcons now have as many wins as they had losses last year.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 29)
Two consecutive ties would have been history… but another overtime win? Meh.

     # 26 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 24)
Not sure what to make of the Browns these days. They look like they are both trying and not trying.

     # 25 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 25)
The Raiders had a golden opportunity to help Dallas lay an egg on Thanksgiving, but then collapsed in the second half.

     # 24 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 23)
Toronto just doesn't give the Bills the home-field advantage that they need. So what if it is cold in Buffalo?

     # 23 - New York Jets (previous: 22)
In our eagerness to be rid of Mark Sanchez, perhaps we proclaimed the era of Geno Smith too soon...

     # 22 - New York Giants (previous: 26)
The Giants keep doing just enough to miss the playoffs and hurt their draft pick positioning in 2014.

     # 21 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 21)
GET OFF THE FIELD, TOMLIN!! Or, if you're there, at least tackle the guy. Geesh.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 19)
After a couple solid weeks of play, St. Louis did not look good against the 49ers - a team they have to learn how to beat if they ever hope to regain dominance within the division.

     # 19 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 15)
The Packers have all but lost the season. If they lose once more, they might as well shut Aaron Rodgers down completely and bring him back 100% healthy in 2014.

     # 18 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 18)
San Diego is fading fast in the chase for the AFC's final Wild Card spot.

     # 17 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 16)
Tennessee missed their best chance to make the playoffs when they let the Colts get away from them last week.

     # 16 - Chicago Bears (previous: 14)
The Bears still have a shot, but losing to Minnesota really hurt their chances for a postseason run.

     # 15 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 17)
A huge win over the Steelers Thanksgiving night has given the Ravens hope for the playoffs afterall.

     # 14 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 20)
Second place in the AFC East is theirs. Can they turn that into a Wild Card spot?

     # 13 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 9)
The loss to the Eagles could be huge come tiebreaker time if the Cardinals can get back on the winning track.

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 12)
The Eagles keep pace with the Cowboys, setting the stage for a possible "winner-take-all" matchup with Dallas in Week 17.

     # 11 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 11)
Dallas teams in recent years would have lost the last two games by failing to make that clutch 4th quarter drive to beat the Giants and by buckling under the Thanksgiving Day expectations when the Raiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead seconds into the game. But this Cowboys team seems to be able to handle adversity, which could bode well for their push to the playoffs.

     # 10 - Detroit Lions (previous: 13)
As the Packers and Bears fade into the distance, the Lions look to reign supreme in the NFC North.

     # 9 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 10)
The offense continues to struggle without Reggie Wayne. If the Colts can't find a new gear before the playoffs, they will be one-and-done, despite hosting the game at home.

     # 8 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 8)
An unimpressive win over an unimpressive opponent. Cincinnati is the least interesting of the division leaders right now.

     # 7 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 7)
Too little, too late for the division, but they control their own destiny when it comes to grabbing one of the NFC's Wild Card spots.

     # 6 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 4)
Did the Chiefs start 9-0 or are they 0-3 in everybody's mind? Kansas City now has to win out and hope Denver stumbles at least one more time in order for them to win the division.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 3)
The Saints were absolutely manhandled by the Seahawks on Monday night. No other way to say it. They may have enough firepower to make it back to Seattle for the NFC Championship Game, but they could be a double-digit underdog going into that contest.

     # 4 - New England Patriots (previous: 5)
Brady just finds a way… but the Patriots should not have to rely on comeback magic in order to beat the worst team in the NFL.

     # 3 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 6)
If the Panthers defense can duplicate next Sunday night what Seattle's defense did to the Saints on Monday, Cam Newton and company will be sitting in the catbird seat of the NFC South.

     # 2 - Denver Broncos (previous: 2)
The division is all but theirs. Now they just have to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

     # 1 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 1)
An earthquake? Talk about home-field advantage. No team wants to travel to Seattle in January, but it now looks like the NFC road to the Super Bowl will have to go through the Emerald City.

Week 13 Power Ranking Awards:

The Free Fallers - Arizona Cardinals (-4), Green Bay Packers (-4), New Orleans Saints (-2), Kansas City Chiefs (-2), Chicago Bears (-2)
