Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 6 (2014)
Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.
When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

I had so much hope for the Falcons to return to their 2012 glory, but three straight losses against beatable teams has me questioning if they will even finish the season at .500.

A tie? Carolina has been a tale of two teams this season so far. One moment they look dominating, as if nobody can beat them. The next they look like moldy swiss cheese. At least Cam Newton is playing consistent. Without him, the Panthers would be winless.

Just when you thought the Giants were coming out of their funk, they go and lay an egg in Philadelphia. The loss of Cruz hurts their struggling offense. An upcoming road trip to Dallas should do little to mend their losing ways.
# 17 - Chicago Bears (previous: 24)
The Bears continue to win with their offense, because their defense can hardly shut anybody down.
# 16 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 16)
A bye week to refresh the legs and refocus the mind. The Chiefs have to win this weekend if they want to be anything more than a Wild Card team.
# 15 - Houston Texans (previous: 11)
Houston was dominated by the Colts early on, but did not wilt under fire and fought back like any great team should. As long as they can stay close with teams, you never know what havoc J.J. Watt can wreck.
# 14 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 17)
The Cardinals continue to find ways to win.
# 13 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 15)
Despite their winning record, the 49ers just do not look that dominating. Their week 7 tilt against the Broncos will be a great mid-season litmus test for San Francisco.

Cleveland finished in Week 6 what they started in Week 1. Since being down to Pittsburgh 27-3 at halftime of their opening game, the Browns have manhandled the Steelers and outscored them 55-13. Looks like Cleveland is no longer content to be the doormats of the AFC North.
# 11 - New England Patriots (previous: 14)
There's the Tom Brady we all know and love. Now, if he could just keep throwing four touchdowns every week, fantasy players everywhere would rejoice.
# 10 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 8)
A tie? What's worse than a tie? Not winning a game that easily could have been won, either by a defensive stop late in overtime or by a made field goal in the final seconds. The Bengals may still be the team to beat in the AFC North, but after failing to notch a win in two straight games, they won't remain the team to beat much longer.

Tough loss at home against a surprising team. The chinks in Seattle's armor are showing. The league just has to look at what Dallas and San Diego did to ground the Seahawks if they want to keep Seattle from repeating as Super Bowl champions.

Aaron Rodgers sure is tricksy. How many times can the Packers pull a rabbit out of their hat this season?

Week 6 Results (2014) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."
In week 6, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals all managed to win a fantasy game they lost (or tied!) in real life.
High score of the week goes to the baltimore Ravens, who scored 118 points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other teams scoring more than the century mark were the New England Patriots (Welcome back, Tom Brady; 109 points) and the Chicago Bears (Running the ball to open up the passing game; 104 points).
Low score falls to the New York Giants at 28 points. They managed to score more fantasy points (28) than the real number of points scored against them by the Philadelphia Eagles (27), but just barely.
Closest Game of the Week: Oakland Raiders 85, San Diego Chargers 84. The Raiders managed to steal their first victory of the fantasy football season, not by outright victory, but by tiebreaker. Both the Chargers and Raiders finished the game with 84 fantasy points, but because the Raiders scored more individual touchdowns (8) than the Chargers (7), they gain a 1-point victory based on Creative Misfortune's tiebreaking rules. Week 5 Results (2014) ~ "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..."
Despite the remarkable number of close games in week 5 (and a decent number of blowouts), only the St. Louis Rams managed to win a fantasy game they lost in real life.
High score of the week goes to the Denver Broncos, who scored 126 points against the Arizona Cardinals. Three other teams also eclipsed the century mark in fantasy points this week: San Diego Chargers (106), New England Patriots (104), and the Green Bay Packers (103).
Low score falls to the New York Jets at 8 points. You read that correctly. The Jets only managed to generate 8 fantasy points total as a team this week. How many players on your fantasy rosters scored more than 8 points by themselves? In the four years Creative Misfortune has been running the "If Real football Used Fantasy Scoring..." feature, no team has ever scored so few points in a game. The closest came back in week 2 of the 2011 season when the Detroit Lions held the Kansas City Chiefs to just 9 fantasy points overall as a team. No matter how you slice it, New York's performance on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers was an epic fail.
Though nobody can compare to the ineptness of the New York Jets, the Minnesota Vikings deserve mention here for being the only team, other than the Jets, unable to score more fantasy points (34) than the real number of points (42) the Green Bay Packers scored against them.
Closest Game of the Week: New Orleans Saints 83, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 75. The Saints survived a real overtime scare at home in New Orleans, but they coasted to a solid 8-point fantasy victory in the virtual world. Despite their real-life upset of the Steelers last week, the Buccaneers remain winless in the fantasy world.
Fantasy Star of the Week: Russell Wilson, 34 points; Demaryius Thomas, 34 points. Russell Wilson continues to defy his critics who refer to him as a "system quarterback". System quarterbacks can't run the ball nearly as well as Wilson. And Demaryius Thomas, where have you been all season? Fantasy players everywhere rejoice at the onslaught of points from this highly drafted wide receiver. Let's hope Peyton Manning continues to find him as we get into the meat of the fantasy football schedule.

With the Monday Night game remaining in week 5, the fifth week of predictions showed the following results for our systems...
Three systems picked games brilliantly this weekend. The Vegas Lines formula picked 12 out of 14 games correctly for an amazing 85.7% accuracy - the best all season. Both the Home Team Wins formula (11/14 78.6%) and the Best Record Wins formula (10/14 71.4%) exceeded the 70% accuracy mark as well.
Creative Misfortune's Home/Away PPY formula picked 9 out of 14 games correctly, for a solid 64.3% accuracy.
The Fantasy Projections formula picked 8 out of 14 games accurately for a typical Home Team Wins success rate of 57.1%.
