Creative Misfortune Power Rankings ~ Week 5 (2014)

Creative Misfortune Power Rankings are based on a complicated formula that takes into account, among other things, a team's projected ability to score an Offensive Fumble Recovery TD. All power rankings guaranteed to be less accurate than real NFL team abilities on any given Sunday and are subject to change on a weekly basis.

When it comes to Creative Misfortune Power Rankings, production is combined with potential to determine a team's true strength compared to the rest of the league. Winning isn't the only factor, but it is one of the most important components of the rating. I don't believe teams can be powerful if they consistently lose, even to other great teams.

The Forked Few~
Abandon hope and fortune all ye who rank here

     # 32 - Jacksonville Jaguars (previous: 32)
                    The struggles in Jacksonville continue.

     # 31 - Oakland Raiders (previous: 31)
The Raiders took advantage of their bye week to fire their head coach. Playing San Diego won't make life any easier for them.

     # 30 - New York Jets (previous: 27)
The Jets played one of the absolute worst football games in recent memory. I doubt Rex Ryan will survive the season if they don't turn things around quickly.

     # 29 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (previous: 30)
The Buccaneers are showing signs of life since being dismantled and embarrassed by the Falcons a couple weeks ago. They'll start winning games sooner rather than later as long as they can keep some positivity going.

     # 28 - St. Louis Rams (previous: 29)
The Rams still have all the potential in the world, but 2014, like so many recent seasons, will be just another rebuilding year for them.

The Creatively Challenged~
     Folly remains ever their mistress

     # 27 - Tennessee Titans (previous: 28)
The Titans are on a four-game skid, but they don't seem like a four-loss team.

     # 26 - Washington Redskins (previous: 26)
Kirk Cousins played well after a disastrous game against the Giants last week, but the Seahawks were just too much for the Redskins to handle.

     # 25 - Minnesota Vikings (previous: 14)
The Vikings looked bad on Thursday night. Bridgewater would not have helped them.

     # 24 - Chicago Bears (previous: 21)
So much promise early on, Chicago's defensive woes are catching up to them and the offense is not doing enough to outscore their opponents.

     # 23 - New Orleans Saints (previous: 24)
The Saints avoided a season-ending disaster by defeating the Buccaneers in overtime.

     # 22 - Carolina Panthers (previous: 25)
The Panthers might have saved their season with a big, comeback win over the Bears.

     # 21 - Cleveland Browns (previous: 22)
Best road comeback ever! Nicest thing about it? Johnny Football stayed on the bench the entire time.

The Remarkably Average~
Dancing the fine line between misfortune and glory

     # 20 - Miami Dolphins (previous: 17)
Nobody heard anything about the Dolphins during their bye week. That is probably a good thing.

     # 19 - Pittsburgh Steelers (previous: 18)
After losing a close game at home to the Buccaneers, you think the Steelers would have been more motivated to score more than 17 points against the Jaguars.

     # 18 - Atlanta Falcons (previous: 13)
The Falcons are quickly becoming the enigma of the league. You think they should be better than they are while at the same time you think they are worse than they should be.

     # 17 - Arizona Cardinals (previous: 4)
Hard to win when your backup backup quarterback has to take the field and try and keep pace with a superstar, Hall-of-Fame quarterback on the other sideline.

     # 16 - Kansas City Chiefs (previous: 12)
All the mystique from their thrashing of the Patriots is gone after one week.

     # 15 - San Francisco 49ers (previous: 19)
The 49ers have quietly moved above .500.

     # 14 - New England Patriots (previous: 23)
Never make the Patriots angry by calling them washed up. You wouldn't like them when they're angry.

     # 13 - Buffalo Bills (previous: 15)
Maybe the Bills can win with Orton now. Who would have thought that?

The Fortunate Seven~
The best of those not yet elite

     # 12 - New York Giants (previous: 16)
Now the Giants look like the Giants of Super Bowls past. Should be interesting to see how they fare against the Eagles with the division lead up for grabs.

     # 11 - Houston Texans (previous: 9)
The Texans are injured and beat up, but unlike in past seasons, they are fighting to the very end and giving the rest of the league all they can handle. Now if they could just get back to winning games…

     # 10 - Philadelphia Eagles (previous: 10)
The Eagles would have a few more losses if their special teams and defense weren't so dynamic. What has happened to the famed Blur Offense?

     # 9 - Detroit Lions (previous: 5)
Anybody need a kicker? If the offense played better overall, it wouldn't matter if your kicker missed three field goals.

     # 8 - Cincinnati Bengals (previous: 1)
So much for being undefeated. Nothing like catching a Patriots team at the wrong time coing out of your bye week.

     # 7 - Green Bay Packers (previous: 20)
After struggling early, the Packers look like the team to beat in the NFC North.

     # 6 - Baltimore Ravens (previous: 2)
The Ravens played the Colts tough, but just couldn't keep pace with them.

The Creative Elite~
     Wielding misfortune at its finest

     # 5 - Dallas Cowboys (previous: 7)
Four straight wins have washed away the harsh taste of an opening weekend loss to the 49ers. If the Cowboys can go into Seattle and knock off the Seahawks, this could truly become a very special, surprising season for them.

     # 4 - Denver Broncos (previous: 11)
Peyton Manning. 503 career touchdowns passes. 66,257 career passing yards and he still had a career day on Sunday. Not enough can be said about one of the greatest quarterbacks of our generation.

     # 3 - Indianapolis Colts (previous: 8)
After opening the season 0-2, the Colts have reclaimed their rightful place atop the AFC South.

     # 2 - Seattle Seahawks (previous: 6)
Seattle comes out of their bye week with a solid win over an east coast team. They'll have to play better at home if they hope to defeat the overly confident Cowboys this weekend.

     # 1 - San Diego Chargers (previous: 3)
The Chargers have dominated teams this year. Sure, anybody can beat the Jets, but San Diego also defeated the Seahawks a few weeks back. The victory, which at first looked like an NFL fluke, doesn't seem like one now.

The Free Fallers - Arizona Cardinals (-13), Minnesota Vikings (-11), Cincinnati Bengals (-7), Atlanta Falcons (-5), Baltimore Ravens (-4)
