Week 13 - Roundup of Creative Misfortune - Sunday Games

For the third straight week, blindly picking the team with the best record leads the way with very solid showing, but both Creative Misfortune and Scottie V matched the blind system in correct picks. How did all other systems compare to this pick system's sudden surge in accuracy? See the results below...

Thursday Night Result:

Houston Texans at Philadelphia Eagles (Actual ~ Philadelphia, 34-24)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Philadelphia, 37-28. Michael Vick and the Eagles will get their offensive groove back against one of the worst defenses in the league, but Houston will put up some points of their own to make the game interesting.
Scottie V's Pick: Philadelphia, 23-21. Fanatical Eagles' fans get the best of Texans on Thursday night.
Vegas Lines Pick: Philadelphia, 31-20. Philadelphia by 8.5, Over/Under 51.
Accuscore Pick: Philadelphia, 30-7. Philadelphia 81% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Philadelphia, 24-20. Philadelphia won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Philadelphia, 20-17. Philadelphia better at 7-4.
Home Team Wins Pick: Philadelphia, 20-17

The Eagles resumed their soaring ways by knocking off the Texans on a short week to take a half-game lead in the division standings over the New York Giants. Michael Vick plays lights out again and leads Philadelphia to a fourth quarter comeback after Houston took the lead in the third quarter. For the Texans, Arian Foster continued to shine, but their playoff hopes took another solid hit on Thursday. With only four games remaining and a 5-7 record, Houston's best chance at making the playoffs is to capture the division title. With the four juggernaut teams in the AFC's North and East, they have no chance at a Wild Card spot. All systems come away with a victory as Houston is unable to upset the Eagles at home.

Sunday Game Results:

New Orleans Saints at Cincinnati Bengals (Actual ~ New Orleans, 34-30)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: New Orleans, 24-10. The Bengals have nothing to play for and the Saints are finally starting to get back to their championship form.
Scottie V's Pick: New Orleans, 30-17. The Saints D comes after Carson Palmer.
Vegas Lines Pick: New Orleans, 28-20. New Orleans by 7, Over/Under 46.
Accuscore Pick: New Orleans, 27-10. New Orleans 74% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Cincinnati, 21-17. Cincinnati won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: New Orleans, 20-17. New Orleans better at 8-3.
Home Team Wins Pick: Cincinnati, 20-17

The Saints take full advantage of a stupid Cincinnati encroachment penalty in the final seconds to steal back a game they had won until the Bengals rallied in the second half. Chris Ivory leads the Saints with two rushing touchdowns, but the defensive collapse in the second half to a great, garbage-time offense, will have the coaches pulling their hair out when they watch film on Monday. All systems, except What If Sports and blindly picking the home team, score a victory along with the Saints.

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (Actual ~ Chicago, 24-20)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Chicago, 24-14. The Lions are better than their record. The Bears may actually be, too.
Scottie V's Pick: Detroit, 24-17. Still not buying Chicago.
Vegas Lines Pick: Chicago, 26-20. Chicago by 3.5, Over/Under 44.5.
Accuscore Pick: Chicago, 24-10. Chicago 69% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Chicago, 13-10. Chicago won 2 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Chicago, 20-17. Chicago better at 8-3.
Home Team Wins Pick: Detroit, 20-17

A questionable call helps the Bears come from behind to take another victory away from the Lions. Chicago improved to a solid 9-3 and held onto their one game lead in the NFC North. The Bears may not be pretty, and they may not win with style, but they have guaranteed themselves a winning record and have complete control of their own destiny. All systems, except Scottie V and blindly picking the home team get the divisional game picked correctly, with perfect partial picks made by Creative Misfortune, Vegas Lines and the Home Team pick systems.

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (Actual ~ Green Bay, 34-16)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Green Bay, 31-17. The Packers are still smarting from their loss in Atlanta next week and the 49ers, regardless of how good they looked on Monday, are still a 4-7 team.
Scottie V's Pick: Green Bay, 31-14. In spite of San Fran's success last Monday night, the Packers are the anti-Cardinals.
Vegas Lines Pick: Green Bay, 27-16. Green Bay by 10, Over/Under 41.5.
Accuscore Pick: Green Bay, 30-7. Green Bay 81% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Green Bay, 20-16. Green Bay won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Green Bay, 20-17. Green Bay better at 7-4.
Home Team Wins Pick: Green Bay, 20-17

The 49ers again prove that dominating teams in the NFC West is not worth a whole lot once you have to venture outside of your division and play a quality opponent. San Francisco kept it close until the Green Bay offense started clicking and Rodgers hit touchdown after touchdown. A powerful run after the catch - one of the most outstanding plays of the season - by Donald Driver sealed the San Francisco's fate. Green Bay keeps pace with the Bears, while the 49ers fall back from Seattle and St. Louis. All systems pick this contest correctly, with only What If Sports getting one team's score perfect.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans (Actual ~ Jacksonville, 17-6)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Jacksonville, 20-10. The Titans are done and the Jaguars are the only team in the AFC South not struggling to find itself.
Scottie V's Pick: Jacksonville, 24-20. The Jags roll into Nashville and get a big win over their divisional rival.
Vegas Lines Pick: Tennessee, 24-20. Tennessee by 3.5, Over/Under 43.5.
Accuscore Pick: Tennessee, 23-16. Tennessee 61% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Tennessee, 31-16. Tennessee won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Jacksonville, 20-17. Jacksonville better at 6-5.
Home Team Wins Pick: Tennessee, 20-17

Jacksonville takes sole possession of first place in the AFC South by hammering yet another nail in Tennessee's self-destructive coffin. Kerry Collins starts for the Titans, but no real spark is provided to the offense as the Titans extend their touchdown-less quarter streak to 13. Chris Johnson manages just 53 yards on the ground, a mere shell of the 186 Maurice Jones-Drews rushes for as Tennessee drops their fifth straight game. Only Creative Misfortune, Scottie V and the Best Record wins system had faith in the AFC South-leading Jaguars as all other systems fall for the home team.

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs (Actual ~ Kansas City, 10-6)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Kansas City, 35-24. The chiefs have to win in order to stay ahead of San Diego. The Broncos, with all their problems, won't be able to stay with them.
Scottie V's Pick: Kansas City, 31-13. The Chiefs avenge their unexpected thrashing in Denver by returning the favor at Arrowhead.
Vegas Lines Pick: Kansas City, 30-20. Kansas City by 9.5, Over/Under 48.5.
Accuscore Pick: Kansas City, 24-13. Kansas City 66% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Kansas City, 28-13. Kansas City won all 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Kansas City, 20-17. Kansas City better at 7-4.
Home Team Wins Pick: Kansas City, 20-17

The Chiefs make the most of San Diego's loss and extend their lead in the division to two full games with a very uninspiring 10-6 victory over the reeling Broncos. Both defenses played stout football throughout most of the game and produced the lowest scoring game of the weekend. All systems had Kansas City winning against their division rival, but no system came close to predicting the total lack of scoring.

Cleveland Browns at Miami Dolphins (Actual ~ Cleveland, 13-10)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Miami, 21-17. If this game were in Cleveland, Miami would be the run away favorite, but the Dolphins have shown an absurd inability to win at home. They reverse that trend with a nail-biter win in South Florida.
Scottie V's Pick: Cleveland, 21-17. Who thought this would actually be an interesting game 3 months ago?
Vegas Lines Pick: Miami, 24-17. Miami by 4.5, Over/Under 43.
Accuscore Pick: Miami, 24-10. Miami 69% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Miami, 17-16. Miami won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Miami, 20-17. Miami better at 6-5.
Home Team Wins Pick: Miami, 20-17

In another defensive battle, Cleveland hits a late field goal to give the Dolphins yet one more loss in south Florida. How can the Dolphins play so stellar on the road and collapse so thoroughly at home? For their part, Cleveland continues to show promise for the future by ruining their draft pick positioning in 2011. Out of all the systems, only Scottie V had Cleveland getting the victory. All the rest of should have known better than to pick the Dolphins to win at home.

Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings (Actual ~ Minnesota, 38-14)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Buffalo, 24-20. Buffalo has played everybody strong lately and the Vikings are anything but a strong team these days.
Scottie V's Pick: Buffalo, 27-17. The topsy turvy nature of the NFL is on full display in this game... Up is down! Black is white!! Buffalo is good!!! Minnesota is bad!!!!
Vegas Lines Pick: Minnesota, 26-20. Minnesota by 5.5, Over/Under 44.5.
Accuscore Pick: Minnesota, 28-9. Minnesota 77% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Minnesota, 23-12. Minnesota won all 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Minnesota, 20-17. Minnesota better at 4-7.
Home Team Wins Pick: Minnesota, 20-17

So this is what 2010 could have been like, had Coach Childress not sent the Three Musketeers on an ill-advised field trip to Mississippi to bring back Brett Favre for another year? Will Brett even finish the season as he now struggles with bad ankles and a sprained shoulder? Are we looking at the possibility of one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history starting the next few games to extend his streak to 300 games and then taking a seat on the bench after the first series so the Vikings can figure out what options they will have at the quarterback position in 2011? Only Creative Misfortune and Scottie V miss the pick by going with Buffalo, but had they known Favre would be knocked out so early...

Washington Redskins at New York Giants (Actual ~ New York, 31-7)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: New York, 24-17. The Giants' win last week, combined with the Eagles' loss, reminds New York the division is still theirs for the taking if they can just execute.
Scottie V's Pick: New York, 27-13. The Giants need a victory to keep the pace in the NFC East.
Vegas Lines Pick: New York, 27-17. New York by 7, Over/Under 43.5.
Accuscore Pick: New York, 28-7. NY Giants 79% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: New York, 28-13. New York won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: New York, 20-17. New York better at 7-4.
Home Team Wins Pick: New York, 20-17

No real surprises here as the Giants dominate their division rival and keep pace with the Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East. All systems get the victory, but the Accuscore system was one New York field goal away from its first perfect pick of the season.

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Actual ~ Atlanta, 28-24)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Atlanta, 27-14. The best team in the NFC shows no signs of slowing down and Tampa Bay can't beat anybody with a winning record.
Scottie V's Pick: Atlanta, 24-17. Not the "World's Largest Cocktail Party", but this game has big-time implications... Matt Ryan will be the difference.
Vegas Lines Pick: Atlanta, 26-20. Atlanta by 3, Over/Under 44.5.
Accuscore Pick: Atlanta, 21-16. Atlanta 59% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Atlanta, 24-14. Atlanta won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Atlanta, 20-17. Atlanta better at 9-2.
Home Team Wins Pick: Tampa Bay, 20-17

Creative Misfortune's #1 ranked team once again stays strong under pressure and comes from behind to defeat their division rival and become the first team in the NFL to hit the 10 win mark. After six straight victories, Atlanta solidifies their case as one of the best teams in the league and the team to beat in the NFC. Tampa Bay showed some spirit before collapsing down the stretch. At 7-5, with no victories against a winning team, Tampa Bay still has a solid shot at a Wild Card spot as only one team remaining on their schedule has a winning record. Only blindly picking the home team proved to be the wrong answer in this contest.

Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers (Actual ~ Oakland, 28-13)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: San Diego, 41-17. The Raiders are shell-shocked and facing the Chargers - in December, in San Diego - will not be the cure they are looking for.
Scottie V's Pick: San Diego, 35-21. Who's going to stop the Super-Chargers? Not the Raiders.
Vegas Lines Pick: San Diego, 30-16. San Diego by 13, Over/Under 45.
Accuscore Pick: San Diego, 31-7. San Diego 82% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: San Diego, 26-21. San Diego won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: San Diego, 20-17. San Diego better at 6-5.
Home Team Wins Pick: San Diego, 20-17

In the absolute upset of the weekend, Oakland shocked the Chargers at home. The Chargers fell behind early as another miscue on special teams costs San Diego. The Raiders have now swept the season series with the Chargers and should any possible Wild Card scenarios fall into the AFC West, San Diego has to be a full game better than the Raiders to have a shot at sneaking into the playoffs. No system had the Raiders winning after how pathetic they have looked in recent weeks.

Carolina Panthers at Seattle Seahawks (Actual ~ Seattle, 31-14)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Seattle, 21-20. Meh.
Scottie V's Pick: Seattle, 27-13. Just what Seattle needs to stay in the hunt in the feeble NFC West, the Carolina Panthers at Qwest Field.
Vegas Lines Pick: Seattle, 24-17. Seattle by 6, Over/Under 40.
Accuscore Pick: Seattle, 21-16. Seattle 60% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Carolina, 17-7. Carolina won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Seattle, 20-17. Seattle better at 5-6.
Home Team Wins Pick: Seattle, 20-17

I said, "meh." Only What If Sports misses this laugher of a game as Carolina falls once again.

St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals (Actual ~ St. Louis, 19-6)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: St. Louis, 28-13. The Cardinals are the worst team in the NFC West. When you're the worst of the worst, how can you be expected to win any game?
Scottie V's Pick: St. Louis, 24-14. Don't look now, but the Rams are playing some pretty good football... The Cardinals, not so much.
Vegas Lines Pick: St. Louis, 24-20. St. Louis by 3.5, Over/Under 43.
Accuscore Pick: St. Louis, 21-16. St. Louis 59% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Arizona, 21-17. Arizona won 3 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: St. Louis, 20-17. St. Louis better at 5-6.
Home Team Wins Pick: Arizona, 20-17

Four field goals will beat two field goals every time. For that matter, one touchdown will also do the trick. St. Louis maintains their share of the NFC West lead by effectively ending Arizona's season that was only on life support because of their division. All systems, except What If Sports and blindling picking the home team, get the pick correct.

Dallas Cowboys at Indianapolis Colts (Actual ~ Dallas, 38-35 (OT))
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Indianapolis, 30-27. The Cowboys make too many mental mistakes to win in Indianapolis, but the Colts are mortal enough these days to allow for a close, entertaining game.
Scottie V's Pick: Indianapolis, 27-23. The Colts get a much-needed victory and the shine starts to wear off in the Jason Garrett era.
Vegas Lines Pick: Indianapolis, 27-21. Indianapolis by 5.5, Over/Under 48.
Accuscore Pick: Indianapolis, 23-16. Indianapolis 61% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Indianapolis, 24-17. Indianapolis won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Indianapolis, 20-17. Indianapolis better at 6-5.
Home Team Wins Pick: Indianapolis, 20-17

The passing woes for Manning continue as he throws another pair of Pick-6 touchdowns to the surprisingly effective Cowboys secondary. Despite the 14-points worth of Christmas gifts Dallas received, Manning still rallied the Colts in the final minutes to force overtime. But another deflected interception - Manning's fourth of the day - allowed Dallas to finally put the Colts out of their misery and achieve a surprising upset on the road. No system saw the Cowboys winning.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (Actual ~ Pittsburgh, 13-10)
Creative Misfortune's Pick: Pittsburgh, 19-16. Act I of the AFC's greatest Week 13 matchups. 4 Field goals and a touchdown vs 3 field goals and a touchdown sounds about right to me.
Scottie V's Pick: Pittsburgh, 23-20. The Steelers knock off their hated rival in Baltimore thanks to some timely turnovers.
Vegas Lines Pick: Baltimore, 23-17. Baltimore by 3, Over/Under 40.
Accuscore Pick: Baltimore, 20-17. Baltimore 55% win confidence
What If Sports Pick: Pittsburgh, 30-13. Pittsburgh won 4 of 5 simulations.
Best Record Wins Pick: Baltimore, 20-17. Both teams at 8-3, advantage home.
Home Team Wins Pick: Baltimore, 20-17

A typical, AFC North slugfest between two bitter rivals ends with Pittsburgh winning by a field goal. Both the Ravens and Steelers pounded each other for a solid 60 minutes, with numerous players falling by the wayside, before Pittsburgh turned the Ravens over late and scored the game-winning touchdown. In such a closely contested game, half the systems went with the Ravens, but the happier half chose the Steelers to steal a big win on the road.

Come back tomorrow to view the final prediction standings following the Monday Night Game and the Wild Card playoff results for Creative Misfortune's "If Real Football Used Fantasy Scoring..." season.
